Calvert County Public Schools chose a phased replacement of the High School that would allow the school to be occupied during the 51 month construction period. The entire school will be demolished, with the exception of the gymnasium, and a new building will be constructed in phases in the footprint of the current school to avoid major site work. The project was proposed in such a way that no swing school would be needed to relocate the students.
The school required replacement, but the school system did not have the adequate budget for a total new high school. By replacing within the footprint, the design economizes by reusing existing infrastructure, the gymnasium, and site amenities, such as the stadium, playfields, and all existing utility systems and existing FF&E. By stretching the construction into 3 large independent phases, this permits the local jurisdiction to fund the project as 3 separate line items over 4 fiscal year cycles.
PROPOSED BUILDING PHASE 1
The first phase to replace Calvert High School will commence with the vast majority of the existing facility remaining in operation. Thirty feet to the west of the existing kitchen a new building will be constructed, becoming the new instructional core of the Calvert High School.
PROPOSED BUILDING PHASE 2
The second phase to replace Calvert High School will be an addition primarily serving the Performing Arts program constructed immediately adjacent to the east side of the Phase 1 building. In order to accommodate this addition, the existing building will be demolished.
The main element to the Phase 2 building will be a large, new Auditorium with a nearly 1,000 occupant seating capacity which will also serve as the a community theater for Prince Frederick.
PROPOSED BUILDING PHASE 3
The third phase of the project will serve the remainder of the Fine Arts program, as well as the Physical Education program.
Level with the main floor elevation will be an area of the Phase 3 addition serving the Visual Arts department. These spaces will have direct access to an Arts Plaza feature which will add an attractive public space welcoming visitors who enter the building through the adjacent after-hours entrance lobby.
The High School will be physically connected to the Career Center to form a single, comprehensive facility.
