The intent of this project is to expand and modify the current Calvert Career Center to suitably accommodate its growing program and revitalize the facility to meet current building standards. The scope of work to be performed on the facility includes a two-story addition enclosing a public atrium/courtyard space, a new automotive and welding structure, as well as various degrees of revitalization within the existing building. The two-story addition includes the cosmetology, food preparation, graphic arts, computer drafting and nursing aspects of the program. Other functions organized around the new central spine are the main office, guidance office, engineering, electronics, computer repair, data processing, radio station, career assessment, and job placement aspects of the program. The industrial and construction trades will now occupy the volume spaces located at the north end of the existing building. Organized around the home improvement lab, whose students spend time rotating through each function, are the carpentry, masonry, precision machining, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC pods. In order to achieve the square footage requirements and exterior perimeter required by the automotive program, an independent structure is proposed to house these functions.
Construction of the project is phased in order to limit the disturbance to the current educational program and is being performed while the facility is in use.
